CAT cut-off for IIM Admission

Every year more than 2 Lakh candidates apply for the CAT Exam to get admission into the top Colleges, Institutes and B-schools. With so many candidates applying every year and with such cut-throat competition, the CAT Cut Off marks, released by the IIMs, are also set at a very high standard.

In order to get admissions in these top colleges, Institutes and B-schools (i.e IIMs, IITs, IISCs etc.) candidates need to clear the Cut off set by the respective IIMs. CAT or the Common Admission Test was successfully conducted on the 29th of November 2020. The results were declared in the first week of January 2021. The CAT Exam for the year 2021 is expected to be conducted in November 2021 and the results would be declared in January 2022 tentatively.

The results are declared online on iimcat.ac.in. every year. Candidates can download the CAT scorecard using their login ID and username. Once logged in, the candidates can access their Sectional score, Overall score, Sectional percentile and Overall percentile.

For CAT Exam there are two types of Cut Offs.

First - CAT Qualifying Cut off – Cut Off that is to be eligible to appear for the Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI).
Second - CAT Final Cut off – Cut off that needs to be cleared for admission.

The first type of Cut Off is the qualifying or the shortlist cut off which is to shortlist candidates for the WAT/GD-PI round. However, clearing this Cut Off does not guarantee that the candidate will be called for WAT/GD-PI. It actually depends on the second i.e. the Final Cut Off which usually is higher than the qualifying or the shortlist Cut Off. There are various factors that come into play while determining the CAT Cut Off:

Difficulty level of the exam
Number of candidates that took the CAT exam
Number of Candidates that cleared the CAT exam
Number of seats available in a particular institute
Ranking/Reputation of the Institute.

NOTE

IIM cut off varies for candidates from different categories (i.e. Gen, NC-OBC, SC, ST, PWD, EWS)
Apart from CAT Overall Cutoff, candidates are also required to clear the sectional-wise cutoff for each. Any candidate who fails to clear the sectional cutoff scores will qualify even if he may have cleared the Overall Cutoff
