IITJEE Advanced Exam Pattern

The Advanced level exam pattern will help you get a thorough idea of the marking scheme, exam duration, medium of the exam. Candidates must also review past year papers as these papers will give them an idea of the JEE Advanced test pattern and other associated data about the exam.

JEE Advanced 2021 is a computer-based exam that comprises two 3-hour tests (Paper 1 and Paper 2). While Paper 1 of the entrance exam will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Paper 2 will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the same day. Both papers are mandatory. Each year, the exact sort of questions asked by the conducting IIT changes.

Papers 1 and 2 of JEE Advanced 2021 will be divided into three divisions, with questions drawn from physics, chemistry, and mathematics. If a candidate answers a question incorrectly in the exam, they will receive a negative grade.

The pattern of the JEE Advanced exam:

  • The exam will not take place using an online interface.
  • There will be two mandatory papers in JEE Advanced: Paper 1 and Paper 2.
  • According to the JEE Advanced paper pattern, objective type (multiple choice and numerical answer type) questions will be used to assess students' academic, comprehensive, reasoning, and analytical abilities.
  • Each question paper in the JEE Advanced pattern will be divided into three sections: physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
  • The papers will involve questions designed to test the candidate's understanding of comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability.
  • For some of the questions, negative marks may be given for wrong answers. At the time of the test, details of the marking scheme will be presented in the "Instructions to Candidates" section.
  • The candidates must carefully read and follow the instructions in the question papers at the time of the examination.
  • The question papers for JEE Advanced 2021 will be in English and Hindi, and candidates at any time during the exam, will be allowed to select their favorite language
  • If a question is dropped, full marks for that question will be awarded to ALL candidates.


General Instructions for Computer-based Tests in JEE Advanced 2021

  • Each paper of the JEE (Advanced) exam will last 3 hours (180 minutes). For PwD students, the duration is 4 hours, i.e. 240 minutes.
  • Every candidate's on-screen computer clock counter will be set at the server.
  • In the top right corner of the computer screen, the countdown timer will show the candidate how much time (in minutes) he or she has left to complete the task. The examination will not be required to be completed or submitted by the candidates. The examination will automatically finish when the timer hits zero.
  • The status of a question as "Marked for Review" implies that the applicant would like to revisit the question. However, if a candidate has just marked a question as "Marked for Review" without addressing it, it will not be considered in the evaluation.
  • Candidates can modify the language at any stage during the exam.
  • One can click the "Question Paper" icon in the top right corner of the screen to see the entire paper.
  • Candidates will be provided with scratch paper at the start of each exam. They should write their name and ID number on the scratch paper.
Total Marks in JEE Advanced

There will be two papers: paper-1 and paper-2. The total marks for JEE Advanced Paper 1 and Paper 2 are 188 each, with 54 questions in each paper. As a result, the total JEE Advanced marks for both papers are 366.

The question paper has three sections. Each section has three sub-sections, of which one sub-section has a single correct. Each portion is further divided into three parts, one of which contains Single Correct Option questions, one of which contains Multiple Correct Option questions, and the third part has Numerical Value Answer questions. Some Exam Day Instructions:

  • Arrive 20 minutes early at the exam centre
  • Please read the exam day instructions on your admit card carefully.
  • Bring your admission card and photo ID with you.
  • Complete and submit the ORS sheet and the calculation sheet before leaving.
  • Check your details displayed on the computer screen assigned to you.
  • Use the scratch paper provided for all your rough notes
